Depot 140th Anniversary, July 4th
The Depot Museum will be open Sunday July 4th, it will be the 140th anniversary of the first train coming to the new Depot. On that day July 4th 1870, about 7000 people came to Saline to take part in the celebrations, including a meal for all put on by the ladies of Saline at "Risdon's Grove." That was probably in or near the Saline Cemetery of today.
Saline was the last town in Washtenaw County to get a railroad. They were desperate and invested $75,000 in the new Company an incredible sum, like millions today.
The first train in the morning from Ypsilanti carried 600 and made trips back and forth all day and almost everyone from Saline and four townships surrounding came and many from Ann Arbor. There was probably a population over 20,000 in that area. This information came from the Ypsilanti Commercial, since Saline did not have a newspaper.
Inside the Fleet Coaches depot
The main depot building in Fleet was built many many years ago and could house six modern 12m coaches. However, due to the front entrance height restriction, this was limited to coaches no more than 3.2metres high. Seen here at the rear are the final three Paramounts, F2 (F232DWF), H1 (H896JPG) and G4 (G51WPF). The depot has given way to housing.
